VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS

Hello fellow literary minded friends. As I sat down to prepare drafting my research paper for Gothic Literature I had a great idea (or at least I think it is 🙂 Let’s celebrate the Gothic literary tradition this Christmas season with an entire month dedicated to poetry, short stories, essays, and chapter excerpts that contain elements of the gothic. What could be better than a Victorian Christmas?

What the heck is the gothic literary tradtion you may (or may not) be asking. Characteristics include but are not limited to the supernatural, repression, degeneration, mystery, the confllict between new and old world thinking, the “uncanny” (when the unfamiliar becomes familiar) passion verse reason, the monsterous woman, the tyrannical man, male and female gender issues, the criminal man, evolution, progression, technology, science and medicine. Classic examples include Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Grey, and others.

How does the Gothic tradition surface in modern day writing? Much in the same way it did in the past. Typical genres that can fall within  Gothic Literature include: horror, paranormal, speculative, thriller, suspense, science fiction, fantasy, even mystery (think Sherlock Holmes) and adventure (think She).

With that being said, if you are a writer and you would like to contribute to a Victorian Christmas with poetry, a short story, flash fiction, a chapter excerpt, or essay please email me at madasinmayfair@hotmail.com. My hope is to add one new author and their writing sample to my blog everyday during the month of December. Please write Victorian Christmas in the subject line and indicate what day you would like to sign up. Please include 3 possible dates in case your first pick is already booked. Also in the body of your message let me know what type of submission you will be sending (poem, essay, excerpt etc) and what genre (paranormal, horror, science fiction etc.) I will get back with you as soon as possible!

I know it is early for some (for those of you who know me personally know that the Christmas season never comes too early) but please spread the Christmas cheer and tell all your friends about this! Authors hosting authors is a great way to share with others in the lit community. Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing back from you —Madasin
